The bus companies are the easiest way to get around as you put all the responsibility of getting from each place to the next in the hands of the bus driver and it is a great way to meet other travellers. Often the most cost effective way for single travellers. The backpacker buses go to the main destinations around the country as well as a few of the not so main ones!

If you are 2 or more, renting a campervan can be a great way to go. Campervans cut your cost of accommodation around the countryside at least in half. Camping in the outdoors and enjoying the absolute freedom of choice of where to go and when is a great way to see the nooks and crannies of our wonder filled country!

Renting a car also gives you the freedom of going where you want when you want and can also be a cost effective way for small groups. Enjoy the many quality backpacker hostels around New Zealand and take your time getting there checking all the secret spots along the way!

Buying a car or van is also a great way to see the country. Although it can be a gamble, if you get the right car and you are buying and selling at the right time you can get by without spending much. Best time to buy is between Easter and the beginning of December. Best time to sell is between Christmas and the end of February. If you are working outside of those times you will need patience and good luck to avoid paying a premium for a vehicle.
